One other thought. The F-4 I used to fly felt a lot different when it was loaded with three external fuel tanks, four Aim-9s, four Sparrows, two  loaded TERs, and a full load of 20MM, than it did when it was clean. It had to be flown differently loaded, than when clean.
 
Somehow I managed to do that safely, even with Gomers shooting at me!    :) :)

 
included in the post below is reference to Dave Morss's LA to Lakeland 6 hour record.
 
I assume he didn't land with empty tanks?  Anyone know how much gas he had?
(this is pertinent to the thread).
I don't know what the tailwind was that day but workiing backwards it looks like he had to have more than 140 gals
