We have completed the "flyoff" of a Lancair 4P Turbine. I was warned by various fans of the Lancair aircraft that I should allow extra time at each fuel stop for "crowd control" as the bird attracts plenty of attention. I am frequently asked questions about the concern over "hot starting" the turbine engine. One of the many upgrades on our turbine 4p is the Limiter sold by VR Avionics. I was asked by a Lancair buyer to post this info to the LML, so here goes. The limiter activates a fuel-derichment valve to eliminate the possiblity that the gas turbine could cause damage to the engine by exceeding the maximum tempature allowed at start up. At this point in time, VR Avionics (VRAVIONICS.COM) has a unit that will limit the interturbine temperature (ITT) during the start sequence to prevent 'hot starts'. I am informed that the unit is upgradable and future versions will incorporate more features. The unit is worth its weight in gold as sold, so we were not concerned about future upgrades when we purchased the limiter. The current unit acts as a start sequence controller, engine protection limiter and engine parameter monitor/recorder. The last feature allows you to download the start data onto a computer. When we first started the engine we were watching for abnormalties and we were able to email the data regarding the intial starts to Diemech Turbines for review. In my humble opinion, anyone building or flying a Lancair Turbine would be foolish not to have a limiter.
