Chat,
I cut out bays for landing lights out near the ends of my wings, used the
cut out sections to make a mold for plexiglass lenses, ran all the wiring
out there and spent a bunch of money on lights only to find that they're so
far apart that even with them angled in, there's a big black hole in front
of the nose when you're taxiing or trying to land.  It was a great deal of
work and in my view, definitely not worth the effort.  All those lights are
good for is recognition flashers at night.  Also, because of the small
vertical clearance out there, you're pretty limited in what kind of lights
you can use and none of the ones I've tried are worth a damn.  Eugene Long
put some kind of HID lights in his ES in a similar location to mine - I'd be
interested in hearing how his work.
I ended up having to put the factory light kit in my cowl to fill in the
hole in the light pattern and it works just fine.  I've seen other ES-s and
IV's with small halogen lights mounted inside the cowl inlets that seem to
work well.
I have no idea how the wheel pant mounted lights work, but at least
they're closer to the center of the plane and would offer a better light
pattern than wingtip lights.  What I's worry about is the fact that the
wheel pants take some pretty good jolts on landing and that can't be good
for the filiments in the lights.
