You are right about the "foc'sle follies" after every line period. Call signs were earned by screw ups, not self designated like "Maverick" and "Goose". One young Lieutenant checked aboard the JFK in VF14-- self designated call sign of "Trapper". After a particularly bad case of the "sh__ts" in the cockpit, it got flipped to "Crapper".

 

Light attack-- day VFR weenies. Medium attack was where it was at-- "any weather-- anytime." A-6's forever.
