Call signs were earned by screw ups, not self designated like "Maverick" and "Goose". One young Lieutenant checked aboard the JFK in VF14-- self designated call sign of "Trapper". After a particularly bad case of the "sh__ts" in the cockpit, it got flipped to "Crapper". Light attack-- day VFR weenies. Medium attack was where it was at-- "any weather-- anytime." A-6's forever.
