In my day, they were "big grey floatin' hotels."  And there was "No slack in
light attack."  One needed thick skin and large gonads, both in the ready
room and in flight.  We weeded out most of the weak ones before they got
behind the ship, hook down.  In one squadron (VA-192) there was a good
natured humiliation ceremony coming off each line period for the most
noteworthy screwup.  The LML is a good place to get into the fight, get
bloodied, get spit out, or win the argument maybe even!  In any case,
everyone learns a bit, thinks a little longer, and might be a little safer.

Great post. This mail list has been a great source of ideas and insight
 about
building, flying, and just plain bs'ing mostly about the Lancair. Back in
 the
day aboard the "big grey jails" -- (USS. JFK and USS FID) it was
 commonplace
to give and take good natured ribbing and the occasional flaming. Heck, if
 a
junior officer couldn't take it you probably didn't want him on your wing
 when
the scheiss hit the fan.
