I asked for a corridor of ten miles on either side of the requested VOR radial to allow for error in my initial navigation and to avoid any traffic along the route. With my request letter, I included a chart with the proposed modified test area outlined in red to depict just what I was asking for. The primary reason I gave for the request was that at the speed I expected for a Lancair, I would traverse the standard test area too quickly to get any real testing done, plus the fact that about half of the standard test area would be over the ocean and therefore not useful to me (I definitely didn't think much of going ten miles out to sea during initial test flights, and the DAR agreed). The best part was that within the requested additional test area were three more airports - just in case. The DAR not only granted my request and added the proper wording to my restrictions, he said he thought it was a very good idea. This all in the Southern California area where the local mind-set says that the Feds aren't especially helpful to the home-built crowd. I found otherwise. Dan Schaefer LNC2 Early 235 N235SP
