The Navy removed avgas from the carrier fleet when the last of the C-1 Trader's retired in the late 70's/ early 80's. Avgas flammability and having to maintian two separate fuels systems aboard ship were the major considerations.

 

JP5 was the Navy jet fuel and JP4 was used by the AIr Force. I was told JP5 was better for flammability reasons. About 10 years ago the U.S. military moved to a new jet fuel JP8 --which both the NAvy and Air Force use.
