Hi guys,
Am hunting around for a new VHF com for LPD. At present it
has an old Collins VHF and collins VOR installed and a single microair
VHF comm.
They are just a headache and so it is time to upgrade. My
initial thought was to go with an ICOM (attracted by the price) but was told
these are "cheap and nasty". The suggestion was the KX155-combined Nav/Comm
and glideslope (I would also need a new indicator). The aircraft is
currently VFR only and in all honesty I am probably not going to fly her
IFR, certainly not in the near future.
The alternative is a
combined Comm/GPS as in the Garmin 300, which I realise is an IFR unit. I am
currently quite happy with my handheld Garmin 196, which I guess could be
panel mounted to satisfy my craving for a GPS in panel.
The outback
where I fly has a paucity of VOR's however so this is why I question the
usefulness of the KX155. There are plenty of NDB's but the unit I have is
currently u/s.
Yes a Garmin 430 would be fab but is
probably a non starter due to price and installation costs etc.
Any
thoughts would be appreciated., with the "KISS" principle in
mind!
Thanks guys,
Gerard
