I had to fly to Cartersville (NW of Atlanta) yesterday at the last minute and thankfully took the A-36 instead of the Glasair. I knew there would be T-storms in the area, and the Banana has a strikefinder. I was getting minimal vectoring data from ATL Center and it went from bad to worse when I had to deviate so far south that they switched me to ATL Approach. I know it's not their job to be my weatherman and I knew that going in, but they would have certainly gotten me killed or close to it in the Glasair yesterday with no strikefinder. I had pings going off about 15 miles off the nose, and finally butted in on the cluster**** going on on the radio, and they gave me the "oh...uhhh....yeah...turn right 330....". I had probably been pissing them off butting in every few minutes but I knew they were forgetting me (and indeed they had). I know they've got better things to do, but if they can't give me a hand all I would like is for them to tell me, and I'll do exactly what I did yesterday. That being to stick my rear on the ground. After my turn to 330 I had pings pretty much all around me, so I lost confidence in them and landed at LZU. We waited for about an hour to no avail and headed back to SC. I have always gotten pretty good help from ATC and wondered what all the griping was about until yesterday! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what they do, but maybe I have been over estimating what they are capable of doing.
