Gary,
The problem with the access panel is accessability. Many ELTs have voice
transmit capability. If you survive an off-field landing, it would be
helpful to be able to get at your ELT quickly to take it with you. It takes
awhile to get all of the screws off the access panel, and that assumes you
have a phillips heas screwdriver handy.
Attached is a photo showing where I mounted mine. I can easily reach it
through the baggage door. The antenna is in the back beside the elevator
pushrod idler arm. There are two wires going into the ELT; one to the panel
mounted remote control and one to the antenna. Both disconnect quickly.
The ELT is an Ameri King and it uses standard D batteries, so they're
easy to change. It has a microphone jack and a detatchable antenna. It also
comes with the remote switch for the panel. I think it cost about $150 or
so.
