Jim
I too was with Global Aerospace last year with my piston IVP. Their latest
offer to renew was: $350,000 hull and 1,000,000 liability, zero deductible,
yearly cost of $12,575. This was only available through AOPA. They
requoted knowing that I am doing a turbine conversion. Their only question
to me was "will that affect the hull value?".
Since I base my plane in Springbank Alberta Canada, I am also finally doing
the import into Canada of the airplane. So now that I am going to Canadian
register it I have had to find Canadian insurance. I have since found
Canadian insurance. They know that it is a turbine now. The Underwriter is
Lloyds of London. New policy is: Hull $550,000 CDN, 1,000,000 liability,
5,000 deductible, premium $15,845 CDN. This is very comparable to the US
rate, just converted into Canadian dollars. Actually the current exchange
rate of 1.26 makes the premiums identical but the coverage on the Hull is
$436,000 USD after conversion.
You can get turbine coverage, I have had it offered by two separate
companies now. I do have a fair amount of experience though and this
probably plays a role. Neither company has had any annual training
requirements on the policy which seems odd. This may be since I have always
had Lancair training to begin with and keep it up on my own anyways. I also
have 11,000 hours of professional pilot experience which also does not hurt.
I believe that if done correctly a turbine can be insured. Although
appropriate pilot experience I am sure will be required. I would think that
if you have not flown something of similar performance or a turbine, that it
may not be possible.
Hope this helps.
