Hi Pete,
Its good to see that you are still working on
it. I'll try to answer some of your questions. Come up and take a
look at mine any time. just let me know when.
1. Did you attach the dust shield to the top of the instrument panel and to
the forward deck? If so how did you attach it (nutplates & screws)?
Attached it to the instrument panel but not the
forward deck (header tank). I did a 2 bid lay-up on the bottom of the
forward deck to form a groove about 1/2 inch deep. The dust cover slides
into the groove and is retained by it. I installed nut plates inside, on
the bottom surface of the panel's top lip. Three 8-32 truss head screws
are (painted black) hold the dust cover down to the panel. I also,
installed right angle 6-32 nut plates to the longeron which are used to hold
down the tabs at the end of the panel.
2. Did you have to cut the dust shield to make it conform to the top
of the instrument panel? Right now my shield juts up a little higher than I'd
like for forward visibility and doesn't nicely wrap over (mate to) the top of
the instrument panel. I've trimmed the sides near the canopy rails and the fit
is satisfactory there.
I think that most of the LNC2 builders have
experienced the same problem with the dust cover not fitting on to the
panel/fuselage. I cut off one of the tabs and constructed a new tab from
epoxy/fiberglass to make it fit. The dust cover should fit down flush on
the top of panel. If the panel is not a problem with visibility, then the
dust cover shouldn't be either. As mentioned by another builder, I suggest
that you build up the trailing edge of the dust cover with foam and 1 bid
fiberglass. A little heat my be required to soften the dust cover as you
force it to conform to the shape of the top of the
panel.
Good luck with it.
Bob
