I normally don't get involved in controversies of which I am not a part.
However, I do have some information that might be relevant.
"Being a cynic, I suspected that Lancair wanted to keep the Lancair IV as
its
flagship top performer, and that's why Lancair did not offer a turbocharged
engine option for the Legacy. Darryl Greenmayer has proved that you can get
a
turbocharged engine under the hood of a Legacy, so there appears to be no
technical limitations there. I don't know if Lancair sponsors Greenmayer
and
that would put Bartel (sic) at odds with Schrameck."
I have had dealings with Joe Bartels on the very issue the above quote
adders. My Legacy (#235) will have a TSIO-550 engine installed. Not only has
Joe not objected to me installing the TSIO-550, but has been very
supportive.
There are modification that are required to get the engine to fit under the
Legacy hood. Darryl Greenamyer's (and also my airplane) will out perform
other Legacys and piston powered Lancair IVs. As a matter of fact, Lee
Behel's non turbo airplane will run away from piston powered Lancair IVs at
the lower altitudes.
For the above stated reasons, I don't believe that Joe Bartels is trying to
keep the Lancair IV as the "flagship top performer" and as a result is
trying to eliminate competition.
