It came down to 10,000 in the late 50's. I heard from some of the original 
100 drivers that Bob Hoover helped get that one under control. They had 
lost so many 100's in the earlier years that the AF got pretty 
conservative in their approach to the bird. They hired Bob to help and 
some of the stories about that are really interesting.

PS: NAF: Were you at Edwards when Bob Titus and Joe Jordan were there? Joe 
did a lot of work with the 104 and held the altitude record for awhile in 
that machine.
