Go to any sporting goods store that carries boating items and pick up a
collapsing boat hook. You can replace the hook with the appropriate rudder
pedal gizmo fairly easily. The one I have in my boat has three telescoping
sections that tightens and/or loosens with a twist, is constructed of
aluminum, nicely silver anodized and very light.

Don't remember the cost but probably around $10.
