Greg,
Here is a picture of the position of my static port. It is in the position
which the manual said to put it. The positioning was quite clear so you
must be missing a page.
You can put in a fitting or piping of your choosing. I just ran a flared
1/4 inch tubing in and left a few inches out inside the fuselage, bent to be
close to the interior side. From there a vinyl tubing goes forward to the
panel. Be sure the tube or fitting is floxed in and sealed at the fuselage.
You will eventually have to pass the leak check on the system.
Another thing. Whenever I park the airplane somewhere on a trip, I cover
the static port with a piece of duck tape. Early on I found that in a heavy
rain/wind, water will find its way into that little hole and block the
static line, thus no airspeed/altitude indication. And that is even with my
canopy cover on, which also covers the static port. And yes, the duct tape
is an important preflight item.
