Attached are some pictures of the heat damage that my cowl has endured
during its first 100 hours.
These are pictures of the left side of the cowl. The right side exhibited
similar scorch marks in a similar location. I'm curious as to why there is
only scorching in these locations. Maybe its because of the airflow is at a
minimum here. I didn't see any evidence of weakness in the underlying
honeycomb. Maybe I caught it soon enough. There is no evidence of
scorching on the outside of the cowl (which currently is still in WLS
primer).
My fix, as you can see in the last photo, is a aluminum backed heat barrier
(ACS 08-06735) that was applied with 3M #77 contact adhesive and sealed
around the edges with DOW fire-resistant silicone. I hope this stops the
further burning (cooking) of the cowl. Since I've covered it all up I
really don't have any measure of further continued damage. I'll let you
know in a couple of years if it gets soft in these areas.
