This weekend I finally got out to take a couple of shots of one of the
tiedown pins I made for my ES.  There are two parts to them, both from the
McMaster-Carr catalog.
The pins are 5/16" stainless steel positive locking quick release pins,
part number 92384A056.  I got mine in 2" and 2 1/2" lengths.  Your length
could vary depending on the placement of your anchors inside the wing.
The ring that the pin is inserted in is a type 316 stainless steel forged
eye nut, 3/8", -16 thread size with a 1160 lb work load limit, part number
3061T17.  We had to hone out the hole at the bottom of the rings a bit to
accept the pins.  I put a dab of hysol inside those holes to hold the pins
in place.
Each pin and each ring were about $15.00 ($30.00 for both), so they
aren't particularly cheap, but what is on these aeromachines?
I made no changes to the anchors.  In fact, the threaded tiedowns
supplied with the kit will still screw into them.  The only thing I had to
do to accomodate the pins was drill up through the BID layups at the top of
the anchors so the pins could extend up through them enough for the spring
loaded ball to protrude through near the end of the pin.  I did this before
closing my wings; I don't know if you'd want to push a 5/16" bit up into a
closed wing, so this may only be a good idea for builders who can still
access their anchors.
I find the push pins to be much easier to insert and remove and they're
rock solid.  The pins are thick enough that I've had no incidences of
bending whatsoever.
