The vernatherm is like a thermostat that is inline (at least in my C172)
with your oil cooler. I stays closed until your engine heats up, then opens
to allow oil to go to your oil cooler. I discovered all of this when I had
a problem with my C172 overheating. Seems it never opened up to allow oil
to be cooled. I tried everything until someone told me about checking my
vernatherm. Replaced it and it nows runs just fine.
