The stiffness is due to aerodynamic control loading at higher speeds combined with the short lever arm on the sticks.  It's common in the IV and ES.  My understanding is that it was a significant enough issue in the Columbia that a servo tab was added to the ailerons to reduce the forces needed in the roll axis in order to appease the FAA.
 
I have an S-Tec 55 on my ES and have had no problem with it turning the plane at any speed.  If your A/P is rough, you might want to check the tension on the cable running between the servo and the pushrod it's connected to.  I had sloppiness in my pitch control on A/P after flying for awhile.  My cable had stretched a bit and needed to be tightened up.  It's been fine ever since.
