This is a problem particularly when you have a battery that just sits. It discharges and worse, the plates sulfate which destroys the battery. Last year I was at an aviation maintenance training symposium and ran into Dan Rankin from Teledyne (Gill) Battery. I've known Dan for a good many years. Gill makes a new technology electronic charger that not only recharges a 24 volt battery but can actually desulfate the plates and dramatically increase its useful life. A nice unit for $250 if I remember correctly and great if you're running a shop. At the meeting Dan recommended a neat little battery "maintainer". This item is NOT designed to recharge a dead battery, but rather to keep it fully charged. It is NOT a standard trickle charger. It keeps a battery charged up and desulfated. Check out the info at: http://www.vdcelectronics.com I've been selling these little chargers to my customers for their cars and such. They come in various models and probably the one most of you will want is the 12 Volt/1Amp - Model #12112E. It lists for about $60, I'll offer them to you all at $40 plus shipping if I get enough interest to justify a large quantity order. They also make a 24v model but it's only available in the heavy duty version. It lists for about $140. I may be able to get a deal on these as well and offer them at about $80 plus shipping. I'll look into this depending on the level of interest. They also make a 12v heavy duty (4a) model. I've used them all myself and they work dandy. You can leave them on forever and not hurt your battery. They will NOT charge a dead battery, that's not what they were designed to do. To top off a battery and desulfate it may take days or even weeks depending on the condition of the battery. If anyone is interested in one (or more) of these little guys send me an email OFF LIST at charger@vineyard.net Thanks, Ted Stanley Direct Flight, Inc. PS - I can also get them in 6-volt if anyone has a need for an older car or whatever
