Subject: Optimal oil quantity on dipstick/ Air-Sep problem

Hi Guys,

I asked TCM about the quantity of oil for preflight.  The Legacy POH says 8 quarts, with 7 quarts minimum (IO-550).

When I changed my oil both times so far, after adding 8 quarts, the dipstick read 7 quarts (before engine start).  TCM recommended to me that I not fill it to more than 7 quarts, and mentioned that every installation is different (HHMMM), and their guide is to fill to the level the dipstick reads after oil change and before starting (which allows oil into the filter and cooler).

I followed their recommendation, and my oil consumption dropped significantly! If I fill to more than 7 quarts, it just goes away (on N27RM’s pretty belly).

BUT, I am still blowing some oil (or sucking it out due to low pressure area in the area of the overflow tube) out of my Walker Air-Sep.  I called Airwolf yesterday and talked with John, who designed a special Air-Sep for me since I have no vacuum system.  He recommended  that I remove the overflow hose completely, then monitor it to see if it drains any.  He stated that he had several customers who experienced this problem, and they took off the overflow hose, and after monitoring it, then replaced it with a shorter length overflow hose.  He said in every case, it stopped the leakage.

Any experience out there on that one?

Ron
