sky".  They seem effective.

Anywhere outside is a problem because you never know what might get damaged
in a hard landing!

Most ELTs have an antenna you can put on the unit after the fact, assuming
you're able.  Which one are you using?  For what it's worth, we do a lot of
ELT tests at annual time and we've been having terrible luck with the ACKs.
At least half the ones we test are either too sensitive or impossible to set
off.
