I am of the opinion that a gascolator does not need to be vertical but can be tilted oh perhaps 20-25 degrees and still be effective. If this alignment is workable you might be able to have a better alignment with respect to the cowling side and be able to reduce the hole. If you do not like this option then another option is to install a 45 degree elbow at the bottom of your gascolator then install the petcock to that 45. This is a better solution.
