Hi all,

Yesterday when I sent the LML post about the Legacy ram air scoop installed in N27RM, I was still so happy with the results of how N27RM flew that I forgot to explain how it works!

As you saw from the two pictures on this URL, http://www.lancaironline.net/pix/brice  the scoop inlet is in the forward cowling inlet on the left side, and the filter sits at right angles to the air flow from the ram air inlet, and above the alternator pad.  I could detect no loss of cooling watching carefully on my CHT’s.  No difference with temperatures comparing left side to right side (#2 still is the warmest of all cylinders, as it is in 199L).

The design allows use of either filtered air or ram air with a piano wire type push pull knob operating a damper valve in the plumbing.  Pretty simple.  I am still operating with pure ram air since Lancair did not have the push pull cable available when I started flying, and my damper is safety wired open.  No work necessary to the cowling, and the only drawback is that the aluminum scoop is visible when looking through the left side forward cowl opening.  I don’t have mine polished yet, and it will look fantastic when it is polished properly.

Ron
