I regularly use the full capacity (53 gallons) that I have in my plane. Going to and from Oshkosh for example. I regularly fly non-stop trips between Seattle and San Diego.
In my case, I have a carbeurator which requires only gravity-feed. If my boost pump fails (due to electrical or mechanical failure) and the engine driven pump also fails, no problem... However, I think if one has fuel injection, it doesn't matter if you have a header tank or not.
I, for one, am glad for the amount of fuel I have.
