We used pieces of hacksaw
blades. They're the right width, firm enough, yet flexible and can be
shaped on the ends with a grinder if needed. The method used was to
spread the filler in the gap, let it thicken a little and run the hacksaw blade
along the edge of the panel, leaving an even, uniform gap all the way
around.
