Don't forget that all the piston seals have unique positions for
retracted versus extended gear.  Therefore a scratch at one end of a
cylinder wall will only leak in one direction.  There is also a unique
poppet valve in the pump for the high and low sides.  These could also
produce a one-direction-only leak.
