Hi Ted, et. al.
Do you know if the V8 configuration of the Thielert will fit in the cowl of
existing Lancairs? So far, my discussions with DeltaHawk (also a "V"
configuration) and SMA, (opposed flat) seem to indicate that there is no
direct drop in replacement for the powerplants we are looking at. The C182 I
test flew at Oshkosh this year was an excellent test BUT...they had to add
another airintake below the standard scoops because the diesels run hotter
(at least theirs does).
The Delta Hawk engine also looked promising with a planned 300 HP version
envisioned but their "V" heads would insure that the lovely lines of the
Lancair's would suddenly develop some bulges. I would really have to do some
serious thinking on the butchering of those works of art before I would do
that kind of mod! And being as the SMA was air cooled but the Delta Hawk and
Thielert's are water cooled, the need for more air (and the big scoop) could
be a moot point but what about you engine wizards? Any thoughts on whether
all air cooled and/or water cooled diesels will require big, ugly air scoops
added?
Another question in particular to the ES and most especially the Super ES
builders, when completed, are they prone to being nose heavy, tail heavy or
pretty much right on? And have any builders had to ballast the tail? That
could be another serious consideration.
