I know of a IVP that lost the cowling on an early test flight - probably (IMHO) due to the hinges coming loose. These were aluminum and were riveted on - not bonded to my knowledge. Bottom line - whatever you do - make sure they are well secured. Luckily the test pilot was able to land the plane in spite of damage to the tail assembly as the cowling halves departed the airframe.
