It is failure to extend the gear we are interested in
rather than failure of the gas struts. If a two struts are installed and
it takes both to extend the gear then failure of either strut is a system
failure. Ergo, failure rate with of a two strut system is twice the
failure rate of a one strut system.
This was Lindbergh's logic when he chose a
single engine plane when several previous attempts to cross the Atlantic in
multi engine planes ended up in the water.
For what it is worth, my 235 nose strut is Motomite part
number 95051. It is the hood raiser for a 79 Elderado Cadillac. It
is directly interchangeable and after 5 years still gives me a snappy emergency
extension at 120 mph
