Over the years, this subject has raised it's head many times with a lot of
listers weighing in with their opinions.
In the early days of Lancair building (like '89 thru '93 +), the word from
the company was that Acetone was VERBOTEN as a lay-up/bond cleaner prep. At
that time, Lance strongly recommended a product called KLIX 88, available
from professional painting materials suppliers.
I preferred not to build my LNC 2 using opinions as guide-lines for
construction of a machine that I was to bet my butt on (and any trusting
soul that might occupy the right seat) so did some bond coupon testing. Once
testing to my satisfaction was done on bonds prepped with the KLIX 88, I
went no further as shear strength of my test coupons exceeded the properties
of the parent material, ie., the tag ends of the coupons failed before the
bond area. (That was shear, in peel I only got that kind of bond strength
when using the then supplied, 3M 2216 structural adhesive).
Lance's early proscription against Acetone in favor of the KLIX may have
also been an opinion, don't know, but as far as I'm concerned, the minimal
testing I did firmly moved that "opinion" to the realm of "fact". Good
enough for me.
The old saying "You pays your money and you takes you chances" was never
more true than when it comes to home-made airplanes.
