Chris,
We see it start anywhere from 12,000' on up. Usually by 14 to 16,000 it
starts or is detectable.
It is worse when LOP because the lean mixtures force the spark plug
electrodes to rise to a slightly higher voltage before the spark is struck
across the gap. This means that the voltage in the entire magneto and
harness rises somewhat before the spark ignites. Bendix mags seldom do this. Slicks often do.
We change out a lot of Slick mags when we do the installations of the turbo
normalized Bonanzas and Cessna 185s.
Even on new airplanes with 200 hours TTAFE.
Regards, George
there a particular altitude where this starts kicking in? What
about at 18-20k with an O360. I have heard this before about Slick mags
and have wondered how high I could go before running into trouble.<<<
