You state;
I Have 50 hours of operation on my LANCAIR IVP.
Here is my list of questions. The list becomes fatter every time I take the
kit flying.
My list was 4 pages until recently, now it's a short page.
1. Flying the pattern for touch and go; Should I worry about quick power
reductions from 38 inches on take off to 25 on crosswind to 20 and down to
13 on downwind all these setting changes in probably 2 minutes?
I flew all my pattern landings in the Factory airplane, I wouldn't do Touch and Goes in any L4. This plane uses runway very fast, The factory check pilots always made me taxi back and set the plane up for take off. If your going to stay in the pattern just use 32 in. for take off, it is about the same, start back on the power before turning crosswind and then keep coming back as you fly a higher and bigger pattern than you my be use too. About 1500 ft. over the airport is best. I don't like the engine treatment in the pattern so I don't do it with my engine, just leave and come back.
2. To maximixe range: If my cruising altitute will be 18,000 , should I
start leaning during climb as long as I watch temp limits?
I still find that my CHT's get up to over 425* in climb at 32/2500 so I have to do something. One thing I do is go LOP in the climb and then watch the TIT's very close to keep between 1630/ 1645* and the CHT's come down to 409* for the hottest 3 cylinders. Or reduce power to 30/2400 and full rich but the CHT's still get up to 430*. I'm still working on this.
3. Flying above 6,000 I have experienced loss of turbo power three times.
From 31mp to 23mp. Power is back in 6 seconds with a few seconds of surge. I
have noticed that high humidity have been a factor every time it happens, I
have been already leveled at my cruising altitute flying the engine FULL
RICH.
Have you tried turning on the LOW Boost? I'm sure you are running out of fuel. Look at fuel flow and pressure. I have experienced the same thing with the surging and loss of power. Just recently in fact. I always put the Low Boost on above 10K ft. except this one time where I was very busy with the weather and ATC, deviating around Tstorms, high CHT's, traffic, etc. and I forgot. At 12K ft. the engine went into this surging mode and loss power while climbing through a layer, so pull power back look below to see of there is ground, look at the SFS for nearest airports, get sweaty. Then I looked at Fuel Flow and knew that something was wrong, then saw the Boost pump switch was OFF. Turning it on solved all the problems except me being very pissed at myself. Hope I never forget again.
Can I suspect the problem can be cause by a mixture too rich?
Probably not. but you need to start with checking all fuel flows according to the book. Do you have 43/44 GPH at full power? 38.5/2700 is a good starting point. Mine had 54 GPH on the first take off and was trailing smoke, from a call from a ground observer. When we lowered that adjustment, the other adjustments had to be changed also.
