I found six inches to be plenty long.  You only need enough authority to
level the wings and balance which typically is you alone in the left seat as
worst case situation.  This assumes you are balancing fuel burn every 30
minutes.

BTW, I draw from both mains simultaneously to feet the header tank so once
the trim tab is set; I never have to touch it again.
