Bob,
I flew a similar device (BFG) during the early stages of TCAS. The
range/ altitude presentation is obviously a far cry from TCAS awareness.
However the affective way that it worked was by rapidly reducing range.
On one occasion we saw 5,4,3,2 miles just tracking down super quick. I
turned 90 before ever seeing the co-altitude guy. This particular
occasion the box prevented a very close encounter. With some
interpolation one could use the box affectively. I'm glad to see prices
are coming into homebuilder ranges. My secondary hesitation following
abject poverty is the potential to get a range/ altitude/ azimuth device
also into the affordable range as the technology continues to forge
ahead.
