There's really very little cost at all.
The aircraft must be de-registered in Canada by the most recent owner there,
and you must submit your request for US registration along with a Bill of
Sale, small fee (I think around $12 or slightly more if you request a unique
N-number) and a copy of the Transport Canada de-registration to the FAA
Civil Registry in Oklahoma City.
Once you have received your US Registration Certificate & N-number, you can
then submit a request for Airworthiness Inspection & Certification to your
local FSDO or Designated Airworthiness Representative. When he or she meets
with you to go over your new airplane, they will want to see the builder's
logs, evidence of compliance with a 100-hour/condition inspection, current
weight & balance, pitot-static/transponder checks & current (changed within
the past 24 calendar months) ELT batteries. You will also need to have your
new N-number properly displayed on your aircraft, along with a 2"-high
(minimum) placard stating "EXPERIMENTAL" located in a place easily seen by
passengers when entering the plane.

at your local FSDO.
