That 17:1 glide ratio sounds awfully high for a Lancair/Glasair. That would be nice if it were true, but I doubt it. From what I understand (and have heard), it also makes a huge difference between gliding at idle, and gliding with a dead engine. I have heard that the results are very different. I am sure that practicing this at idle is a good idea, but I wouldn't bank on that observed ratio with the engine stopped.
