Hey Guys,

So after the debate of late concerning the L-IV Turbine, I was telling a
friend of mine about them and the fact that cruising at 312 Kts, climbing at
3500 FPM and such was pretty cool.   Their range limitations notwithstanding,
this could be a really cool toy.

When he found out that you'd probably have about $450K tied up to get one
flying he suggested I try out an L-39B Jet.

I took a demo ride today and WOW!

The climb out at 180 KIAS was 4500 FPM, cruise at 9500 ft was 325 KTS burning
150 GPH.  High altitude cruise at FL260 is 360 KTAS with a burn around 140
GPH.  Range is about the same as the Lancair Turbine (+/-2 hrs) and of course
it onlyu seats 2 so its not real practical as a traveling machine but what a
RUSH.

It too is an experimental and you need 1000 hrs PIC and a letter of
authorization from the FSDO to fly it (the experimental equal of a type
rating) but for sheer sex appeal on the ramp .... WOW!

The cost for these little jets is $175K-$375K.  The one I flew was priced at
$345K and he had an older one with similar times at $244K

With the fuel burn of 140 GPH you are going thru the kerosene pretty fast but
for the difference in price (L-IVT @ $450 minus L-39B @ $245K = $205K) you
can buy about 82,000 gal of Jet A which would last you for 565 flights hours
during which time you would cover over 190,000 miles!

To all you current and former jet jocks out there MAN I UNDERSTAND THE
ATTRACTION!  :)  :)

Anyway, maybe the perfect situation is a Lancair IVP with a standard engine
for long trips and an L-39 for joy rides :)  :)

Food for thought.

Regards,

Dave Riggs
