They found that the use of the landing light cut the incidence of the bird strikes by about 50%. That is one of the reasons the use of the landing light is SOP for both military and heavy civil iron in the takeoff and landing phases of flight, regardless of time of day or weather. Perhaps its use would be a good idea for us as well, in light of our speeds and small frontal cross-sections--we need to help our avian friends "see and avoid". Douglas W.
