Out in my shop I have a large toolbox full of tools including about 49 different kinds of screwdrivers. I believe the meaning of life is having the right tool for the job ;) Why would I limit myself to one type of solvent? MC is the best for bond prep BUT it is very bad when mixed with people. Lucky for me the EPA doesn't have my address. Acetone and MEK are good and slightly less toxic. Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) is a poor cleaner but people friendly (BUT as David points out, IPA can contain up to 30% water, very bad for bonding).
I used IPA when the bond is not critical (widget bracket) or when I couldn't use anything stronger (like on the windows). Acetone works for general clean up but I take out the big gun (MC) whenever a critical structural bond is at stake.
Dan has the best plan. Develop and test the cleaning and bonding procedure on coupons. There is a LOT more that goes into the bond than the cleaning solvent. Wipes, abrasive, environment, ect.. all contribute and you need to be aware of them. Save the coupons so years later when you sell your plane you can demonstrate your superior craftsmanship and careful attention to detail. One test is worth a thousand "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV" expert opinions.
IMHO reagent grade anything to use as a cleaner is a waste of money. Think of cleaning as a process of dilution. Using more of a cheaper solvent will likely get things cleaner than less of an ultrapure solvent. I can hear it now: "Jim, use the RG Ace but be careful with that s**t, it is $34/gallon, just use a little on the corner of the wipe to clean the whole airplane."
But that is just my opinion and I could be wrong.
