Pretty good advice from Chuck Brenner on prep for bonding, however (there's
always a "however" popping up in this list) I would advise one slight change
to his recommended method.
Chuck wrote: "These parts come from a mold and has some type of mold
release or wax on them. Other wise they would never get them out of the
molds. So first sand surface fairly well. Clean."
Given that there is (or may be) some sort of mold release on the surface, I
recommend one adds a cleaning step before sanding or it's possible to grind
the release agent into the pores of the bond area during sanding, making it
much harder to remove.
So it's a good idea to FIRST clean, sand and then clean again.
I used this method on my 235 (early) and prior to any parts bonding, used
trimmings from the skins (on early LNC2's we did a lot of trimming of excess
materials adjacent to bond-lines) to make several test coupons for pull
(shear) testing. All tests resulted in the parent material failing before a
bond failure.
