John,
PPG makes the products I use to prep aluminum for paint. I use the same
process that most structural repair parts get at a large aircraft
maintenance facility.
DX 533 is an aluminum cleaner. It contains phosphoric acid. Scrub the
prepared surface with a sponge wetted with this solution untill warm water
sheets off of it with no beading. Rinse well and drain but do not dry.
Immediately apply (by dipping if possible) DX 503 aluminum conditioner.
This is colored alodyne (as opposed to clear). Allow the metal to attain a
light golden color. Do not wipe, drain the part momentarily and rinse in
hot water. Dry well. Your heat gun may be used. The applied finish will
wipe off when wet but adheres well when dry.
Apply a two part zinc chromate primer such as DuPont Variprime Self Etching
Primer 625S. Top coat with a two part polyurethane paint. You now have the
best looking and most corrosion resistant part which you can be sure will
last years before any corrosion sets in.
