Dan,
I put mine ~1 foot behind the hydraulic pump. I made a shelf out of aluminum
with flanges and taped the shelf to the sidewall with 1 bid fiberglass. It
feels very solid. I would be glad to send pictures if you like.
I made a dipole antenna and glued it to the inside of the tail as far as I
could crawl back, though Scott Krugers Z-shaped comm. antenna sounds like a
better idea as it might go further back.
Even though I separated them as far apart as I could, my com antenna talked
to the ELT originally and made it fire. I had to ran a heavy ground line
strait from the battery to the ELT which solved the problem. If you can,
keep them as far apart and out of line as you can.
After I got my antennas in I had a guy come and check them with a meter. It
was well worth it, as several of the antennas were very weak and needed to
be redone.
Scott
