Hell, no, we don't!

We prefer the lower costs and/or higher performance of the homebuilt arena,
but if you're introducing unnecessary risk into your project you're doing
something wrong.

The FAA reduces risk via an expensive process of analysis and testing.
Bypassing this process may or may not involve extra risk.  If a part is
specified to certain limits and has proven itself in another application
(say, the automotive world), and the differences between the automotive
environment and the airborne environment are accounted for, where's the extra
risk?

The structural integrity of an aircraft design should be demonstrated
somehow, by analysis or test, but need not be done to FAA standards as long
as it's done thoroughly.  Where's the extra risk?

I won't deny that there are aspects of the homebuilt market that add risk,
but I don't know anyone who prefers additional risk.  We manage risk, we
accept some risk (probably more than the FAA allows in the certified world),
but we certainly don't prefer it.
