Bruce,

Gee, I don't mean to disparage any light system that costs $1100, but .....

I installed the original Lancair recommended GE 4509 100 Watt in my 320 cowl
and found it was perfect as one descended to the runway -- the light right on
the centerline -- but, Good Lord!, in the flare I saw nothing but darkness.
Being adverse to the touchy-feely night landing technique, I installed a 100
watt halogen projector lamp on the left landing gear with a simple aluminum
bracket, a Lexan cover, and Voila!   As I used the usual flare (round-out for
jet perfectionists), looking out the left side, I had the tarmac beautifully
illuminated (go to the light!).  Later, Tim Ong provided aluminum casements
for such lamps in any color (see his website -
http://www.leadingedgeaircraft.com/ -) for these lights at merely $150 a
PAIR.  The only special additional wiring you may desire is requiring that
the gear be down and locked before allowing the lights to illuminate (in-wing
heat management controls).  An additional benefit of leg mounted lights is
that the bottom of the airplane is bathed in light (including the exhaust/oil
stains) -- highly visible to Canadian Geese in the night landing pattern.

Go forth safely lit and spend thy money wisely,

Scott Krueger
