I bought a LoPresti Boom Beam unit for testing.  Heat was one of the big
concerns but the unit runs incredible cool.  I'm going from memory here but
for about half the current, it produces four times the candle power of the
standard 4509.  In my mind, that translates into a four times increase in
efficiency.  Taking that one step further, that means more electricity goes
into making light, not heat.  The final test: I powered the unit up and was
able to HOLD the reflector assembly until I got board!  Eventually, as in
maybe 30 minutes it did get got.  Now try that with a standard bulb.
Needless to say, I was quite impressed with HID technology, even at its
elevated price.

Quoting Bruce Gray:

"These are the best and brightest lights on the market. Their only downside
is cost."

How about heat output into the surrounding structure? Certain types of
lights tend to run extremely hot
