No matter how you plan, you end up with a spider web of the fiber optics behind the panel, which just set my teeth on edge every time I looked at it. I like a neat panel, and there just isn't any way to make that system neat. Also, some of the bezels didn't fit the instruments very ell -- when I tightened one of them down (on the DG, as I remember), it cracked the glass face of the instrument, which then had to be sent for repair and overhaul. [Whenever glass breaks on a gyro, reg's require an overhaul!] This time I ordered lighted versions of all the instruments I could, and yes, the price is ridiculous, up to a coupla hunnerd smackers for a light bulb. On the couple of instruments that were not available in lighted versions (electric AH, e.g.), I used the NuLite bezels. On the AH, however, I did have to put some nylon washers in as spacers, as I was afraid the same thing might happen to the glass face. Still better than post lights, I think, but IMHO both systems leave something to be desired. On the much-thrashed-over MC issue, you ought to see the MSDS for ordinary table salt (NaCl). Makes it sound like salting your french fries is a life-threatening decision. The MSDS is the ultimate CYA exercise for bureaucrats. When you read over the MSDS for MC, and look at the other health information available on the web (including several sites listed here over the past week or so), I think you have to conclude that the risk is minimal and that the superiority of MC as a grease solvent, coupled with its non-flammability, makes it the best choice.
