Dear All,
Spare a thought for all the Lancair owners who do not have the pragmatic
FAA to deal with! Even though the USA is one of the bodies signed up to
the ICAO you chaps do not have to comply with the silly rules over
registration letters/numbers. The actual international rules are that the
fuselage will have 30 cm (11") high and the under-wing 50 cm (19") high
letters/numbers. The only exemption is if the aircraft's surfaces are too
small to take these sizes. In this event the largest possible size must be
used which will fit. In the case of an LNC2 (unfortunately) the fuselage
and wing WILL take these sizes so my aircraft is 'blessed' with "G-FOPP"
emblazoned on both fuselage sides and under the left wing in the same scale
as a Boeing 747/400! This means, according to the authorities, that if
either the Jumbojet or the Lancair fly too low the people on the ground can
report us by using the registration. Incidentally, I have used vinyl
stick-on letters which can be removed with a hot gun.
I flew a British registered Glasair across the US from Washington DC to
Seattle last year and very few Controllers actually knew from which country
the aircraft had come! So, be careful guys, you could easily run the risk
of believing that the World begins and ends in the US. If you leave the
authority of the FAA you will soon come to realize how lucky you are to
have them - there is no country in the World that is better regulated, in
terms of discretion and practicality, than the USA. If you want a really
hard time come to Europe. Call me if you do - of course.
Happy Landings,
michael
